This city was settled at the convergence of the Sacramento and American rivers and enjoyed a front row seat to the California Gold Rush of 1849. Its many museums and historical sites have successfully preserved the spirit of that fascinating era. Today, the capital city boasts a high percentage of government jobs, as well as opportunities in health care and professional services. You'll also find California State University, Sacramento located here. More highlights include:
- Old Sacramento. This 28-acre National Historic District hugs the Sacramento River and offers visitors a chance to catch a ride on a steam locomotive, sail aboard a river cruise, or enjoy a horse drawn carriage through a retro town filled with shopping, dining, and entertainment. Some of the historic buildings date back to the 1850s, and you'll also find the California State Railroad Museum here.
- Sutter's Fort State Historic Park. The oldest restored fort in the United States was originally built by John Sutter in 1839. It was abandoned several years later when gold was discovered on Sutter's property in nearby Coloma and set off a little phenomenon known as the California Gold Rush. The restored building now hosts a museum that chronicles early pioneer life, including the ill-fated Donner Party. The park is a Living History Museum set in 1846 and you can visit a trade store, bakery, carpenter's shop, distillery, and more.
*Consistent with California energy regulations, new homes must be equipped with solar panels. These are not included in the posted price, but may be leased for a monthly payment, or purchased for an additional cost that may be eligible for mortgage financing. The required size of the solar system depends on several factors, including home size and climate zone. The installed solar system may reduce your monthly local electric utility company bill. For more information, see sales agent and Solar Energy System Addendum.
