Located less than 20 miles south of Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina was formed in 1963 when the towns of Fuquay Springs and Varina merged together. Tobacco trade and agriculture were the early economic pillars of this area, though today the community is experiencing a spike in population and real estate development due to nearby Research Triangle Park. You can step back in time by visiting the Historic District with buildings dating from 1899 to 1946 in a range of architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Bungalow/American Craftsman. Landmarks of the district include the Ballentine-Spence House (1910), the first house in the area to have plumbing and electricity. More highlights include:
- Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park. This 28-acre site includes two miles of walking trails with overlooks and bridges.
- The Fuquay-Varina Museum Complex. Visitors can museum hop among six locations: the First Fuquay Post Office, "Squire" Ballentine Schoolhouse, Johnson Playhouse, Tobacco Barn, Centennial Museum and Norfolk Southern Caboose #375.
Of special note is the Fuquay Mineral Spring, which was discovered on a tobacco farm in 1858. The water was believed to have healing powers and visitors flocked to the site. Today the spring has been incorporated into a park that offers a restored springhouse, walking track and picnic tables.
