Though Las Vegas was incorporated as a city in 1911, you could say the town really came to life in 1931 when Nevada legalized casino gambling. Nestled in the Mojave Desert, the city is now synonymous with nightlife and boasts a landscape of exotic hotels that includes a giant Egyptian-style pyramid and a miniature Statue of Liberty. But there’s more to Vegas than all that decadent distraction. For a change of pace, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, located on the campus of the University of Nevada, offers fine art exhibits from both local and international artists. And the city’s Natural History Museum features a dinosaur exhibit, live sharks, and a Living History presentation on Ancient Egypt mummification. More can’t-miss attractions include:
-
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. This 195,819-acre oasis includes a 13-mile scenic drive, hiking and biking trails, camping, and a visitors' center.
-
The Neon Museum™. More than 200 retired signs are gathered in an outdoor display, and the visitors’ center occupies the rescued lobby of the demolished La Concha Motel.
Between the sunny climate and the carefree vibe of the Strip, you might think you’re in paradise – and as it turns out, you actually are. The unincorporated town of Paradise, Nevada, is adjacent to Las Vegas and is the actual location of the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign as well as most of the Strip.
