This beautiful city began as a trading post in the 1800s and has grown in size while still retaining its small-town charm. Kissimmee hugs the northwest shore of Lake Tohopekaliga (also known as Lake Toho), the seventh largest lake in the state. Location means everything in this Florida town with its proximity to a diverse range of activities, from the splashy nearby Orlando attractions to the retro Old Town entertainment complex and local river boat tours. This cozy city will have you wishing you lived here (unless, of course, you do). More highlights include:
- Kissimmee Lakefront Park. This site offers a gorgeous view of Lake Toho, and visitors can enjoy walking paths, pavilions, picnic areas, a playground, splash pad, farmers market, and a lighthouse.
- The Kissimmee Air Museum and Warbird Adventures. You'll find 22 aircraft on display, including a 1928 Arrow Sport and a North American P-51 XR Mustang, as well as an engine and gun collection, and WWII artifacts. You can also take flight with an instructor in a North American T-6 Texan through the Warbird Adventures flying school.
- The Monument of States. This towering structure was completed in 1943 and contains a rock from each of the states. Instigated by Charles W. Bressler-Pettis, a retired physician and President of the All States Tourist Club, the beautiful monument weighs 100,000 pounds and contains 1500 stones and objects from around the world.
It's interesting to note that Lake Kissimmee is actually located in Lake Wales, Florida, which is further south of the city.
